Microneedling Treatment

Microneedling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT) has been used for decades by dermatologists for treating scars, but in recent years has also become popular for treating wrinkles, pigmentation and other skin issues.

The process uses a pen-shaped tool to deliver tiny punctures to the skin using tiny needles moving very fast vertically in a stamping motion. This stimulates the natural healing process in the skin, resulting in production of new collagen and elastin and a rejuvenated and more youthful complexion. To help with this process, active solutions containing collagen, vitamins and other beneficial ingredients are applied and penetrate the deeper layers of the skin through these tiny channels, to maximise the benefits.

Dermapen microneedling can help treat the following skin conditions:

  • Diminish the appearance of scars and stretch marks
  • Improve the texture and overall appearance of the skin
  • Reduce the volume of blackheads appearing on the skin
  • Reduce pore size resulting in smoother skin
  • Help stop acne and cystic acne progression
  • Exfoliate skin thoroughly and remove dead skin
  • Slow down the signs of skin ageing as evidenced by reduced fine lines and wrinkles

Dermapen is the original and most trusted automated microneedling brand for this innovative anti-ageing and scar correction treatment. Dermapen technology has significant benefits over dermal-rolling and Fractional laser treatments, due to the minimal trauma inflicted upon your skin. This allows your skin to spend more effort fighting the ailment itself, rather than collateral damage inflicted during the procedure itself.

Advances in technology means the latest version, the Dermapen4™, is safer than ever, with an anti-contamination mechanism, revolutionary 16 needle cartridge design, and increased speed to keep the needles from dragging. Dermapen4™ is also the only microneedling device with a dedicated scar setting, suitable for surgical, burn, striae and post-acne scars.

When all safety standards are adhered to, Dermapen microneedling is a very safe treatment. This is because skin needling works by using the natural process of your skin’s rejuvenation, unlike more invasive treatments, to reduce signs of ageing and help improve a variety of skin concerns.

Scared of needles? Not to worry, you’ll barely see these mini micro needles, which merely “stamp” together on the top layer of the skin, rather than “’injecting” into you. The purpose is to create the tiniest channel punctures, and the Dermapen4™ has more, faster-moving needles than ever before. Since this device has the most advanced technical features, with a speed of 120 rotations per second, pain will be minimal compared to traditional microneedling and there is no need for numbing cream.

It’s best you don’t have excessive sun exposure for a couple weeks before your treatment, and it’s important you haven’t used any self tanner (fake tan) for a week prior to your treatment. This is because you need the skin to be completely clean.

The amount of treatments you need generally depends on which skin area you’re wanting to treat, and what you want to achieve. If you’re wanting to treat extreme sun damage, deep wrinkles or scars, you may need six treatments for the optimal results. Basic skin conditions such as pigmentation and fine lines may only need between three and four treatments for great results. Your clinic will advise you on the frequency of the treatments, but they will usually be spaced between 3 and 8 weeks apart.

Results can be seen in your skin straight away, in that it will be brighter and plumper for the next few weeks. However, the best results will be visible few months later, once the new collagen and elastin has been regenerated by your skin. This will continue to improve as you have your next few treatments.

Straight after a treatment you may notice your skin is plump and glowing – but also a little hot and pink, similar to windburn. This may last for 6 to 24 hours, so you want to ensure you don’t do a Dermapen treatment in the two days before an event. Your clinician will apply a protective lotion called DP Dermaceuticals Cover Recover which will reduce this redness with a cooling effect, as well as providing a bit of coverage and SPF-30 sun protection.

You won’t need to cleanse or moisturise your skin for the next 12 hours or so, as you’ll have all the products with moisturising ingredients applied already, so don’t wash your face or apply any creams before bed. It’s important to avoid sun exposure, and for 24 hours post-treatment to minimise use of active skin products and non-mineral makeup. Your skin may also feel a little dry the few days after your treatment, after which it will become smooth and radiant within a week.
